This book is worthy of so much more then 5 stars!!! I have never read a book that has touched me and made me feel things that I had a hard time believing were out there....hope, faith, redemption.
Mrs. Lee has taken a HORRIFIC situation and shined a light on it with grace and empathy for every "Violet" out there. She has made a statement with this book. She has let survivors know that it will be ok and better things are coming. Death is not the only solution. She reminds us all that our pasts do not have to define our future. She also tells us that just because you share the same DNA as a group of people does not make them your family. Family is a gift that comes in all different forms. Some people have the misfortune of having to wait a little longer to find or make their true family.
I know that some readers are going to have a hard time getting through this book, because of the subject matter. My advice to you is not to give up on this book. Mrs. Lee has done a FANTASTIC job of being sensitive to the subject matter. She is shining a light on a problem that so many people are more comfortable believing that is just not true or could never touch them. She is giving a voice to so many who have been silenced for so long. Listen to them!!

** spoiler alert ** An AMAZING novella and cautionary tale about the dangers of domestic violence!!! Erin Lee has delivered one of her most powerful stories through Emma, Riley, and Abby!!!
I walked into this story with my eyes wide open about the subject matter....I am in awe with how Erin Lee nailed the emotions of not only the victim/survivor and abuser...but also the surrounding family members. This story reads like a true story...not a work of fiction based on fact.
I highly recommend this book to many readers...upper high and college school students, educators, parents, family members of a victim of Domestic Violence....and anyone looking for an amazing story. Not all of these stories have a happily ever after...I think that Mrs. Lee showed the real ugliness and truth to this situation through this book. I also think that this story is a great dialogue starter for a very hard conversation!!!

Her Name Was Sam is one of the best books that I have EVER read!!! Erin Lee has BLOWN ME AWAY with her special way of giving hope when it seems that all is lost. She touches her reader's spirits with her stories. This book is no different!! This book gave me hope that out of tragedy, beauty and life can come.
Her Name Was Sam tells the story of what happens after a life is gone. The after effects of the people who loved the person who chose to take their own. We got to see how Sam's family struggled and grew. By the time you get to the last page, you will not have dry eyes. We also gets to see how Sam grows after the choice to end her life. We get to see Erin Lee's vision on what happens after death.
I highly recommend this book to members and loved ones of the LGBT community. I also think that anyone who has a heart can and will relate to this book. This book is one of the rare ones that will stay with you long after the final words are read. This book will inspire you to be a better person and to help change the world around you for the better!! I am so thankful to have read this book and know that I will be looking at my world through rainbow colored glasses now. I hope that I am lucky enough to meet and love someone like Sam!!! Thank you Erin Lee for sharing this story with the world!!!
